Chinese Yoga — Qi Gong – Yoga's Child: Chi Kung
In the 4th century C.E., the yogi Da Mo traveled to the Buddhist monasteries in China bringing with him the vitality of yogic practices. Inspired by the already thousand-year-old system of Chinese medicine and the energetic meridian bodyscape he went on a 7-year retreat to discover the intricacies of the more subtle energies in the body. His meditation became the act of not only feeling but also listening to the internal energies of the body. He returned with a working knowledge of the energy centers and a series of exercises designed to smooth and increase the flow of life force (chi, ki, qi, prana, mana) in the body. In the subsequent 1500 years of experimentation by Buddhist and Taoist practitioners hundreds of styles and thousands of postures have become the healing art known today as Chi Kung or, pinyin Mandarin, "Qi Gong."
The word Chi is considered an indefinable term in Chinese culture but loosely refers to the life force in all things. Different traditions call it by different names: prana, mana, or, in today's terms, bio-magnetic energy. Chi Kung literally translates into "energy work". It is rooted in the principles of active relaxation and mindful breathing. Da Mo honed in on the benefits of consciously circulating breath along the energetic meridians and discovered that, when a person tenses, their muscles' chi becomes dammed. Too much "muscle" work leads to a stagnation of chi and can eventually lead to illness and disease. For example, there are plenty of runners and highly active people who still suffer from illness and dis-ease because they do not equally cultivate their internal energy and smooth out the stagnation caused these more yang activities. By relaxing the physical and engaging the focused intention of the mind to consciously circulate the life force and to draw on the universal energy, vitality and longevity become abundant. When our mental faculties are focused with diligence we activate the healing potential that resides in all of us. Hospitals in Japan and China have documented that certain practices of Chi Kung speed up the healing process, prevents disease, improve digestion, regulate blood pressure, and reduce stress.
The Six Healing Sounds style of Chi Kung is a unique style that 5th Generation Master Gin Foon Mark first learned from the "Old Master" of Beijing. This style is a culmination and combination of Master Mark's Chi Kung training from his early training in several other temples. It is a truly unique mixture of Chi Kung styles. The non-strenuous exercises and the resonance of sub-vocal sounds (these are not chants) produce a cooling effect within the internal organs, strengthening and healing the body at the foundation. The forms and postures create an easy gateway for the beginner and a complex microcosm for the advanced student of Chi Kung. In addition to the Six Healing Sound form, this class will focus on cultivating the root and the small circulation (microcosmic orbit) of abdominal breathing.
